Human Evolution and Development
This book is the result of years of teaching evolution to students of biology, biomedical science and health sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. As part of the course, the students were to apply their obtained knowledge by writing an essay, under the theme ‘Do humans still evolve?’ This assignment time and again resulted in numerous unexpected and original ideas. This book is our own answer to that question.

Bio 2010
The report recommends a comprehensive reevaluation of undergraduate science education for future biomedical researchers. In particular it callsfor a renewed discussion on the ways that engineering and computer science, as well as chemistry, physics, and mathematics are presented to lifescience students

Making Sense of Complexity
This report documents a recent workshop 1 at which approximately 85 biomedical scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians shared their experiences in modeling aspects of cellular function, diseasestates, and neuroscience. The topics were chosen to provide a sampling of the rapidly emerging researchat the interface of the mathematical and biomedical sciences, and this summary has been prepared as anintroduction to those topics for mathematical scientists who are exploring the opportunities from biomedical science

Science vS. Religion The SeaRch foR a RaTional appRoach
The views of science and religion are very important in the lives of most people because they give them a sense that they understand the world and provide answers to many existential problems. Unfortunately, the debate between religion and science is becoming more acerbic each day. This book endeavors to engage in a civil and rational discussion of these important subjects.

The penguin dictionary of architecture and landscape architecture
his is the first edition to be published since the death of Nikolaus Pevsner, whose loss we acutely feel. From the book’s inception, now more than twenty-five years ago, he was the guiding spirit and it was only at his repeated insistence that his name appears last on the title-page - ‘alphabetical order, please! That is correct,’ he would say. He wrote the entries for medieval and nineteenth- and twentieth-century architects, as well as the European and American national entries and most of the stylistic ones.

Transparent Minds in Science Fiction An Introduction to Accounts of Alien, AI and Post-Human Consciousness
This book is based on two abiding sources of excitement and awe: the science of the brain and the stories of science fiction. Ever since reading J Z Young’s Programs of the Brain at school I have been intrigued by the brain and our slowly unfolding knowledge of how it works. Based as it was on the learning opportunities afforded by brain misfunction—due to injury or illusion—the research that Programs of the Brain described struck me as practical and evidence-based science, one benefiting in its explanatory power through the (then) new metaphor of the computer.

DATA MINING FOR THE SOCIAL SCIENCES
Data mining, especially as applied to social science data, is a rapidly changing fi eld, and our understanding of these new methods has benefi ted enormously from the teaching and advice of others, most especially Professors Robert Stine, Robert Haralick, and Andrew Rosenberg. Several students who are using these techniques in their doctoral research projects have contributed their wisdom. First and foremost, Darren Kwong prepared several of the worked examples reported in this book, sometimes struggling with obdurate software in the process.

Review of NASA’s Biomedical Research Program
The Strategy report gave the highest overall priority to specific research questions dealing with boneand muscle loss, changes in the function of the vestibular and sensorimotor systems, orthostatic intolerance, radiation hazards, and the physiological and psychological effects of stress. Although the committee found the balance of NASA research between the various biomedical disciplines to begenerally consistent with the relative emphasis given to them in the Strategy report, many of the specific research topics given the highest overall priority are still to be addressed
